Cython Extension Module for libgbinder
Codex Specification Details
Python bindings for libgbinder · Open Source Maintainer · Linux
gbinder is a Cython extension that exposes the native libgbinder API to Python applications. The project sits at the boundary between Python and native Linux infrastructure, requiring the extension to be compiled and linked against the underlying C/C++ library.
I maintain the Python package and its distribution through PyPI, including release packaging and compatibility work required to keep the binding usable as the surrounding Python and Linux ecosystem changes.
What I worked on
- Maintain and publish the Python package on PyPI
- Package a native
libgbinderinterface for Python through Cython - Work with Python extension builds and native shared-library linking
- Maintain source distributions and installation workflows
- Diagnose build and runtime issues across Linux environments
- Work with the dependency chain between Python, Cython,
libgbinder, libglibutil, andpkg-config - Maintain the project as part of the Linux software ecosystem surrounding Waydroid

Why it matters
This is a relatively small package, but it represents a class of engineering work I care about: maintaining the boundary between high-level software and native system libraries.
The binding is used as a Python-facing interface to libgbinder, which is part of the infrastructure used by projects such as Waydroid. The upstream gbinder-python implementation consists of Cython declarations for the native API and Python-visible bindings compiled into a shared extension.
Maintaining a package like this involves more than writing Python code. The extension has to remain compatible with the Python interpreter, Cython-generated code, native ABI expectations, compiler/toolchain changes, and Linux distribution environments.
Open-source contribution
The package is distributed publicly through PyPI under the GPLv3 license, with Meshack Bahati listed as its maintainer.
The project is also part of a broader Linux ecosystem where gbinder-python is consumed by Waydroid and packaged by different Linux distributions.
